Trained and certified by the developers of the Oxford Mobile-Bearing Partial Knee System as one of the first instructors in the American market.

Utilizes a muscle-sparing total hip arthroplasty technique.

Dr. Keith Berend, a native of Columbus, Ohio, received his undergraduate degree from Florida Southern College. He completed his medical doctorate and orthopaedic residency at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. 

While in training, he received several major awards for his research work including the Clinical Orthopaedic Society Resident/Fellow Research Award, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association Resident Research Award, the American Orthopaedic Association – Zimmer Annual Travel Resident Research Award, Duke University’s Division of Orthopaedics Annual Award for Outstanding Research, and an International College of Surgeons Research Scholarship. 

Dr. Berend completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction of the Hip and Knee at Joint Implant Surgeons, Inc., with Thomas H. Mallory, MD, and Adolph V. Lombardi, Jr., MD. He joined that practice in 2003 and was a founding physician of New Albany Surgical Hospital. 

Dr. Berend was a Hip Society-British Hip Society Traveling Fellow in 2004 and a John N. Insall Knee Society Traveling Fellow in 2005. Dr. Berend and Joint Implant Surgeons annually host over 150 visiting national and international surgeons at their center, and are now a host site for the Knee Society Traveling Fellowship. 

Dr. Berend is a volunteer surgeon for Operation Walk, a charitable organization which provides medical education and free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries. Dr. Berend is the author of numerous articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals, and frequently presents his work at medical conferences both domestically and internationally. 

He is a reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, The Journal of Arthroplasty and Orthopedics. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at The Ohio State University.

 He is a member of The Knee Society, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, The Piedmont Orthopedic Society, The Ohio Orthopaedic Society, and The Columbus Medical Association. 

His special interests include muscle-sparing total hip arthroplasty, less-invasive total knee and partial knee arthroplasty, resurfacing hip replacement, knee arthroscopy, rapid rehabilitation protocols for faster recovery after surgery and outcomes studies. 

In 2004 Dr. Berend traveled to Oxford, UK, and was trained and certified by the developers of the Oxford Mobile-Bearing Unicompartmental Knee System as one of the first 12 instructors for the American market. Dr. Berend and his brother, Michael E. Berend, MD, together sponsor and host the Emily Berend Adult Reconstruction Symposium at Duke University.
